Muscle Imbalances: Understanding and Correcting to Perform Better

Why do muscle imbalances hinder your progress ?

Muscle asymmetries : an invisible but very real obstacle

Are you a coach or young professional in the sports field ?
You have probably already heard of muscle imbalances. But have you really measured their impact on your clients? These asymmetries, sometimes subtle or even invisible, are much more than a simple detail: they can hinder progress, cause chronic pain or even lead to repeated injuries. And, unsurprisingly, this problem particularly affects amateur athletes.

Rough movements: costly mistakes

Why do amateur athletes suffer more from them ?

Unlike professional athletes, amateurs often lack personalized supervision.

They train alone, often with rough movements or poorly mastered postures. And that's where the problems start...
Let's take a simple example: excessive pronation of the foot when jogging.
This small detail can trigger a domino effect :
*    A collapse of the knee inwards (the famous knee valgus).
*    A stiffness in the hip, which limits its mobility.
*    Imbalances in the pelvis, causing lower back pain and compensations in the spine.
Result ?
Each step accentuates these imbalances, and injuries become inevitable. A study by Ferber et al. (2010) also showed that muscular imbalances increase the risk of injury in amateur runners by 40%.

Observe subtle clues to refine your diagnosis

Coaches : detecting and correcting is the key to progress
Identifying these imbalances is a real skill that requires much more than a quick observation. To achieve this, you need :
Precise tools :
*    Perform functional tests such as squats or joint mobility analysis (Thomas, Ober tests, etc.).
*    A sharp eye : Decipher movements and identify subtle clues, such as internal rotation of the femoral or collapse of the arch of the foot. Postural study should be an essential part of training.
*    Personalized solutions : Adapt exercises to strengthen underused muscles (for example: the abductor hallucis, the intrinsic muscles of the foot to name a few...), improve mobility and correct motor patterns.
Moreover, according to Schoenfeld et al. (2016), an individualized training program, based on the analysis of muscular imbalances, not only increases performance, but also significantly reduces the risk of long-term injuries.

Why sharpen your view of muscular imbalances ?

Posture & Perspectives: training to make a difference
Let's be honest ! These skills are not always covered in depth during studies. Initial training often remains general, and topics such as postural analysis or functional correction are sometimes overlooked.
It is precisely to address this gap that I created the Posture & Perspectives training.

My ambition ?

To provide you with concrete tools and methods that can be directly applied in the field.

With my 10 years of experience in re-athleticization and 20 in high-level physical preparation, I offer you training that combines theory and practice, so that you can offer a real plus to your clients.

A message for coaches

If you are a coach or a STAPS student, I encourage you to refine your view of these imbalances. They often go unnoticed by your clients, but correcting them can transform their sporting experience. A smoother stride, a better aligned body, less pain: this is the recipe for a satisfied and loyal client.

And you ?

Do you think that your current training has given you the keys to identifying these imbalances?
What tools do you use today to help your clients correct them?
If you are interested in these questions, follow me: I will soon share practical cases and specific exercises to help you go further...
